An earthquake is the shaking of the ground when two tectonic plates interact. the study of earthquakes is called seismology. Most Earthquakes happen on the boundaries of two tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are pieces of earths crust floating on the mantel. They can also occur on faults. There are two types of Deformation, plastic deformation and Elastic deformation. Pastic deformation does not cause earthquake. The three main types of faults are Transform, when two plates slide past each other. A divergent boundary where two plates pull apart, and a convergent when two plates pull apart. An earthquake zone is an area of a large number of faults. Waves of energy that travel through earth are called seismic waves. There are two types of seismic waves S and P waves. The focus is the point where the earthquake occurs and the epicenter is the point directly above the focus on earths surface. The richter Magnitude Scale is the way earth quakes are measured. Most earth quakes can not be felt. Now with more modern technology many things can be done to help strengthen a building such as cross braces, mass damper, active tendon system, flexible pipes, and base insulators. these thing can help make a the difference between a standing building and a falling building.
