Rocks and Minerals
A mineral is a naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure. minerals are made up of elements, elements are pure substances that can not be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means. Some minerals are also made of compounds. Compounds are a substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically bounded. Crystals make up the solid geometric form of the mineral by repeating structure of atoms or molecules.that is present throughout the mineral.
In the mineral there are two types of minerals; the Silicate mineral and the non silicate mineral. Silicate minerals make up 90% of Earths crust. Silicate minerals are made up of a combination of silicon and oxygen. Non silicate minerals are made mostly of carbon, oxygen and sulfur.
Some common Silicate minerals are Quartz, Feldspar, and Mica.
Some Common Non silicate minerals are Copper, Calcite, Fluorite, Corundum, Gypsum, Galena. (Holt Science and Technology Earth Science)
